Russia is disconnecting its internet from 2026: what awaits citizens

Preparation for the isolation of the Russian internet
Росія планує обмежити доступ до інтернету з 2026 року: які наслідки це матиме для громадян?

The Russian authorities are tightening control over the internet. According to the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, starting from March 1, 2026, 'Roskomnadzor' will gain expanded powers, allowing it to block websites and even disconnect the Russian internet from the global network without a court decision. They simply declare 'distribution of prohibited content' – and that's it.

According to Russian officials, this is necessary for protection against cyberattacks, but experts are skeptical. They believe this is merely an attempt to create censorship and separate citizens from truthful information, making it easier to influence and control them.

As reported, the occupying administration in the temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia region is trying to legalize the forced mobilization of local residents, particularly in Melitopol.

Additionally, the Kremlin has already initiated a program to relocate 'new Russians' to the occupied territories, attempting to replace local residents with its supporters by enforcing mandatory military conscription for the residents of these areas.

The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation sees these actions as an attempt to subjugate citizens and create a propaganda network. Step by step, Russia is strengthening its control over information, which could have serious consequences for freedom of speech and human rights as a whole.
