The Launch of the TRIPP Project in the South Caucasus

According to ХВИЛЯ: The initiation of the 'Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity' (TRIPP) project in the South Caucasus is eroding the Russian Federation's status as the region's dominant power. This shift is underscored by the creation of a joint Armenian-American management company, which will oversee key transport hubs between Armenia and Azerbaijan for a period of 49 years. According to assessments by Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, Russia is losing its footing in the South Caucasus, and this project represents a significant milestone in that trend. This development is part of a broader realignment of regional alliances following Russia's war in Ukraine.

Impact on Regional Dynamics

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan noted that Russia's involvement in the development and implementation of the project was not even discussed during negotiations between Yerevan and Washington. Furthermore, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has issued an ultimatum to Russian Railways (RZD), the concessionaire of Armenia's railway, compelling it to restore destroyed tracks leading to the borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey. This highlights Armenia's increasing pressure on Russian assets within the country.

The TRIPP project entails:

  • Constructing new railway and highway arteries along the Iranian border;
  • Laying new oil and gas pipelines;
  • Establishing modern fiber-optic communication networks.

These measures will help forge a strategic link in the Trans-Caspian route, connecting China, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and Europe. Consequently, this new transport initiative could substantially alter the regional balance, reducing Russia's influence while strengthening cooperation between Armenia and the United States.

The launch of TRIPP may mark a pivotal stage in transforming the geopolitical architecture of the South Caucasus. Armenia appears intent on bolstering its position by deepening ties with the US and reducing its historical dependence on Russia. These changes could pose fresh challenges for Russian foreign policy in the region and significantly impact the economic and political relationships among Caucasus nations, Turkey, and Europe.
