Russia Levels Accusations at the United States

According to ХВИЛЯ: Russia has accused the United States of refusing to bring the war in Ukraine to a close. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that Washington is stepping back from its role as an impartial mediator in the conflict, stating:

“Washington appears to be distancing itself from the role of an honest broker and has forgotten its own statements made by Trump last year” - Sergey Lavrov.

He further emphasized that

“any hope that the U.S. could serve as a fair intermediary has long been shattered” - Sergey Lavrov.

Discussions on Support for Ukraine

At last week's G7 summit, Donald Trump agreed to tighten sanctions on Russian energy after being impressed by long-range strikes that Ukraine carried out against military targets near Moscow and an oil refinery on the city's outskirts. Trump pointed to the scale of losses, noting that “together, the sides are losing around 25,000 troops each month.” Meanwhile, during Senate hearings, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Russia may never be able to achieve through military means what it demands at the negotiating table, adding that “the goals they set on day one, they certainly will not reach.”

Zelensky and Trump discussed support for Ukraine during a dinner in Évian-les-Bains. Zelensky reported that Trump and Rubio responded positively for the first time to the issue of licenses for interceptor missiles for the Patriot system. Senior officials in Kyiv see signs that Trump is ready to offer stronger backing to Ukraine and increase pressure on the Kremlin, although “there is little faith in Trump’s consistency in Kyiv.” Details of the support are to be worked out by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov and American representatives.

At the same time, Putin, commenting on Ukraine’s strikes, called them a “gesture of desperation” and asked, “what are they for? To destabilize society?” Lavrov also expressed the view that “Russia must reach an agreement,” while continuing to criticize U.S. actions. He noted that “I don’t even want to suspect that Alaska, like Europe’s actions, was conceived to buy time and continue arming the Kyiv regime.”

In Moscow’s view, Russia will now focus on achieving its war objectives. Allies are urging Washington not to stop sharing intelligence data, as Ukrainian strikes are believed to rely on U.S. intelligence information. The Kremlin believes that special envoy Steve Witkoff distorted Russia’s position ahead of a meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska, while the White House denies these allegations.

Lavrov’s statements highlight the escalating diplomatic tensions between Russia and the United States amid the war in Ukraine. The situation remains tense, with the positions of both sides on ending the conflict appearing increasingly opposed. Adding to the complexity, shifts in the U.S. political landscape could affect existing support for Ukraine, a concern already felt in Kyiv.

As tensions escalate, the implications of Trump's recent decisions on sanctions and military support are becoming increasingly clear. His stance has sparked a wave of disillusionment within Russia, reflecting a shift in dynamics that could further complicate the situation.
