Russian Lawmaker Rodnina Questions Stadium Beer Ban, Contrasts European Football Culture
Irina Rodnina's Observations on European Football Culture
According to Главком: Irina Rodnina, a three-time Olympic figure skating champion and a deputy in Russia's State Duma, has commented on the prohibition of beer sales at Russian stadiums and shared her views on the contrasting football culture in Europe. She observed that at European stadiums, such as during FC Barcelona matches, attendees often come with their families, creating a notably calmer atmosphere compared to the environment at Russian venues.
Rodnina raised the question of why beer consumption is permitted in stadiums abroad while it remains banned in Russia.
"Why is it that everywhere else you can have beer or even stronger drinks, but we cannot? Perhaps it's because we start behaving a certain way? All over the world there is a permissible alcohol limit for driving, but ours is zero,"
she noted. She also emphasized that attending football matches should be an enjoyable experience for everyone, including children.
Experience at Barcelona's Stadium and Comparison with Russia
Rodnina recounted her experience at Barcelona's stadium, which holds 98,000 spectators.
"I was struck by the fact that a 98,000-seat stadium empties peacefully within 15 to 20 minutes, unlike here where they release sections separately. Why don't they separate fans there, but they do here?"
she asked. In her view, watching football in Europe is a genuine pleasure, unlike her experience at a Russia national team match at Lokomotiv Stadium in the 2010s, where she
'couldn't understand for 40 minutes why the players kept running across the field if the goals were on the right and left.'
Separately from Rodnina's comments, it is notable that in social media, gymnast Ilteriakova has actively expressed support for the war against Ukraine. She has liked posts featuring Vladimir Putin and Russian military personnel, follows the page of Nikita Nagorny-who is under sanctions from Ukraine, Canada, the US, the UK, and the European Union-and is also subscribed to the pages of Russian propagandist Shaman and a fan page for Alina Kabaeva, who is under sanctions from a number of countries including Canada and the US.
Rodnina's remarks on European football culture and Russia's stadium beer ban highlight a stark contrast in sporting traditions between nations. Her comments touch on broader social issues concerning alcohol consumption and public safety at major events. This discussion comes amid ongoing international scrutiny of Russia's domestic and foreign policies, which often frames internal debates within a wider geopolitical context.
