Divisions Within Russia’s Ruling Class

According to Главком: Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, reports that a faction of Russia’s elite no longer supports the war launched by President Vladimir Putin. Instead, these figures are pushing for a ceasefire and the start of peace talks. According to Kovalenko, Putin now faces several possible paths: ending the war, announcing a new wave of mobilization, or attempting to provoke a direct confrontation with NATO through aerial escalation.

There exists in Russia a group of influential elites who advocate for halting hostilities and entering negotiations. However, those in favor of continuing the war and delaying any resolution currently hold stronger positions. Kovalenko noted that

“Russian elites may eventually have to deal with the Putin question in order to end this military madness, which the declared Russian leader still refuses to stop.”

Diplomacy and Investment Bets

It is worth noting that diplomatic efforts without the backing of military force have been attempted since 2014, yet they failed to produce results. Kovalenko stressed that

“diplomacy without power, relying on logical arguments and references to international law, has been used since 2014. And no party that engaged Putin from a position of logic was successful, because such diplomacy collided with two parallel realities.”

On the Polymarket platform, an anonymous investor placed a $370,000 bet that Putin will leave the Russian presidency by December 31, 2026. However, the platform rates the likelihood of this scenario as low. This situation underscores the uncertainty surrounding both the mood among Russian elites and Putin’s next moves.

The divisions within Russia’s elite reflect deep internal contradictions that could shape the war’s future trajectory. With growing pressure from the international community and from within the country, the position of those advocating for peace may strengthen if Putin fails to ensure stability and security for his regime. At the same time, the lack of clarity about the country’s future leadership highlights the risks that could arise from a change in power or a radical shift in Russian policy.

As the internal struggle among Russian elites intensifies, the pressure for a strategic shift is palpable. This internal discord is mirrored by calls from hardliners within the Kremlin advocating for an aggressive response to perceived threats.
