Russian security forces detained Azerbaijani businessmen (video)
According to glavcom.ua: Special forces in the Russian cities of Voronezh and Yekaterinburg detained businessmen from Azerbaijan. In Voronezh, a search was conducted at the home of Yusif Khalilov, who owns a restaurant and is a co-owner of a market. Although this information has not yet been officially confirmed, diaspora media have already reported on the businessman’s detention.
During the detention, witnesses reported that a shot was fired at the businessman’s car. His son was released later.
In Yekaterinburg, Mutvali Shikhlinsky, the son of the head of the Azerbaijani diaspora and owner of a shopping center, was detained. This situation led to increased tensions in relations between Russia and Azerbaijan, and protests took place in Yekaterinburg on June 27, 2025, due to the raids and detentions.
Countries' reactions to the conflict
After these events, Azerbaijan canceled cultural events planned with the participation of Russian institutions. Searches were also conducted at the office of the 'Sputnik-Azerbaijan' agency, and FSB agents posing as journalists were detained.
Moscow also threatened 'direct communication and clarification of the situation' with Baku and summoned the Azerbaijani ambassador due to hostile actions and the detention of Russian citizens.
As a result of the detention of Azerbaijani businessmen in Russian cities, tensions arose in interstate relations, and both countries took specific steps to respond to this situation. Azerbaijan canceled cultural events involving Russian participants, conducted searches and detentions, and identified FSB agents posing as journalists. Moscow, in turn, threatened 'direct communication' with Baku and noted unfriendly actions in relations between the countries.
