A Russian Soldier's Defection to Ukraine

According to Главком: A Russian soldier named Artem, serving in the 102nd Motor Rifle Regiment, has defected to Ukraine. He made contact with Ukrainian forces in the winter of 2024 through the 'I Want to Live' project, a Ukrainian state initiative that provides a safe surrender corridor for Russian personnel. During his defection, Artem provided crucial intelligence on the logistics and positions of Russia's 150th Division, which directly aided successful Ukrainian military operations.

A native of Novosibirsk, Artem had been serving as a drone operator in the 102nd Regiment without proper training. His unit was operating in the areas of Sofiyivka and Volodymyrivka. The information he supplied led to the destruction of significant Russian military assets, including:

  • four drone crews,
  • four mortar crews,
  • a Chinese-made rocket launcher,
  • at least two tanks.

To reach Ukrainian positions, Artem traversed a distance of 20 kilometers.

Desire to Continue Service

After crossing over, Artem expressed his wish to continue serving on Ukraine's side, specifically by joining the 'Russian Volunteer Corps'.

"I want to continue my service on Ukraine's side as part of the 'Russian Volunteer Corps'," he stated.

Separate Russian Interior Ministry data from 2024 indicates a broader context of internal pressure, reporting that over 157,000 foreigners who violated migration laws were forcibly expelled from Russia that year-a 45% increase from the previous year. This figure fell to 72,000 people in 2025. Such statistics point to growing migration challenges within Russia, which can have wider implications for regional stability.

This defection highlights potential shifts in the morale and motivation within the Russian armed forces. The intelligence provided by Artem proved vital for Ukrainian military operations, underscoring how such actions can impact the battlefield. The concurrent migration data suggests underlying social and economic strains in Russia, factors that also contribute to the complex security landscape of the region.

The recent defection of a Russian soldier underscores the increasing strain on Russia's military forces. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of their mobilization efforts in light of significant casualties.
