Study Finds Pink Noise Disrupts Sleep, Cutting Key Phases Short

Pink noise disrupts sleep: phase study
Дослідження показало, що рожевий шум впливає на якість сну, скорочуючи важливі його етапи.

How Pink Noise Affects Sleep Quality

According to Главком: A study from the University of Pennsylvania has revealed that pink noise can negatively impact sleep quality by shortening crucial sleep stages. The experiment involved 25 healthy adults and found that exposure to pink noise reduced REM sleep by approximately 18 minutes per night. This phase is vital for memory consolidation, concentration, and mood regulation. While white noise is often promoted for sleep, this research highlights potential drawbacks of other 'color' noises.

Experimental Conditions

The seven-day study had participants sleep under various conditions:

  • in complete silence,
  • with ambient noise,
  • with pink noise,
  • and with a combination of noises while using earplugs.

The results showed that ambient noise also shortened the deep sleep phase by an average of 23 minutes. The study's lead, psychiatry professor Mathias Basner, noted that

"a constant sound background can interfere with the brain's normal processes during sleep."

Furthermore, Daniel Blanes Jacar, a clinical neurophysiologist and sleep unit coordinator at Spain's Sanitas-La Zarzuela University Hospital, emphasized that

"the frustration and anxiety of being unable to fall asleep only worsen insomnia."

Experts advise keeping noise volume low, using a timer, and checking whether the noise genuinely improves morning well-being.

Published in the journal Sleep, the research underscores the significant impact of the sound environment on sleep quality and overall health. These findings are particularly relevant for individuals suffering from insomnia or those who struggle to sleep in noisy environments. Understanding how different noise types affect sleep can lead to better guidelines for improving sleep quality and general wellness, highlighting the importance of creating a favorable sleep environment through noise control.
