Scammers Target Ukrainians with Fake Power Outage Compensation Offers
Fake Social Media Messages Circulating
According to Главком: A surge of fraudulent messages is spreading on social media, falsely promising financial compensation from Ukraine's national power grid operator, Ukrenergo, for recent electricity blackouts. Ukrenergo has issued an official statement confirming these offers are a scam designed to steal personal and banking information. The company clarifies that it does not supply electricity directly to households and therefore cannot issue any such compensation payments to consumers.
The fraudsters provide links to fake websites designed to mimic the online portals of major banks like Oschadbank or other financial institutions. On these sites, users are prompted to enter their bank card number, expiration date, and CVV code. Once this data is submitted, the criminals gain access to the victims' accounts and can withdraw funds.
Ukrenergo warns citizens: 'We officially state that this is another manipulation on a sensitive topic. NEC Ukrenergo is the transmission system operator, which does not supply electricity to household consumers and, accordingly, cannot pay any compensation. The goal of these fake messages is to steal personal data, specifically banking information.'
This scam campaign exploits the genuine hardship caused by widespread power outages in Ukraine. Separately, earlier online rumors suggested possible increases in electricity and heating tariffs in Ukraine. However, the Center for Countering Disinformation has assured the public that this information is false. Ukrenergo urges citizens to be vigilant: 'Please be careful and do not let scammers deceive you. Do not click on any suspicious links or enter personal data. If you accidentally entered your bank details, block your card immediately. Use only official sources of information and warn your relatives and friends about these fraudulent schemes.'
Advice for the Public
The scam messages may come in various forms, falsely claiming partnerships with Oschadbank, the UN, or the Red Cross. Citizens should remain extremely cautious, especially given the current unstable economic situation.
This situation underscores the critical need for user caution amid a rise in fraud, particularly during times of economic strain. It is vital for people to be aware of the risks associated with sharing personal data and to consult official sources to verify any news or announcements. Sharing this warning with friends and family is also crucial to help prevent potential fraudulent activity.
