Russian Spy Uncovered in Ukraine’s Defense Forces

According to Главком: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) military counterintelligence, together with the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR), has uncovered a Russian agent operating within the country’s defense forces. The suspect, a recruited inspector from the State Border Guard Service, was responsible for adjusting artillery and missile attacks on northern Ukraine. According to investigators, he plotted routes on Google Maps for Russian missiles and drones, and also recorded the positions of radar stations, anti-aircraft missile systems, and mobile fire teams.

The agent collected this intelligence during official trips to the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. He stored the data on his personal smartphone, intending to pass it to his handler in Russia-an officer from the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) of the Russian military. Following the handler’s instructions, the agent also attempted to track the locations of Ukrainian drone units and energy infrastructure, posing a significant threat to national security.

Arrest and Consequences

The SBU apprehended the agent while he was conducting reconnaissance near a potential target. During searches, authorities seized his smartphone, which contained a report meant for the GRU along with coordinates of Ukrainian assets. SBU investigators have charged him under Article 111, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which covers high treason under martial law. He is currently in custody without the possibility of bail, facing life imprisonment and confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out jointly with the DBR, under the procedural supervision of the Chernihiv Specialized Defense Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Region.
