Ukrainian Security Service Strikes 41 Russian Aircraft in $7 Billion 'Spider Web' Operation
Inside the 'Spider Web' Special Operation
According to Главком: On June 1, 2025, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) executed a large-scale covert mission codenamed 'Spider Web.' The operation targeted five Russian military airbases, destroying 41 strategic bombers and surveillance aircraft belonging to the Russian Federation. Estimated damages exceed $7 billion.
Preparation for the 'Spider Web' operation took over 18 months. It was carried out under the directive of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with former SBU chief Lieutenant General Vasyl Malyuk overseeing the mission. The attack utilized 117 FPV drones, inflicting severe losses on Russian aviation capabilities.
Targeted Airfields and Impact
The airfields struck during the operation included:
- 'Belaya'
- 'Dyagilevo'
- 'Olenya'
- 'Ivanovo'
Aircraft destroyed in the strikes included Tu-95, Tu-22M3, Tu-160, and A-50 models. The operation also resulted in the destruction of part of Russia's 'nuclear triad.' Notably, since 2024, Russia has been using old car tires to protect its parked aircraft, a makeshift measure that proved insufficient.
An SBU spokesperson commented: 'The 'Spider Web' operation was prepared over more than a year and a half under conditions of total secrecy and maximum conspiracy. Its goal was not only to inflict massive losses but also to shatter the illusion of security that Russia had been building for decades.'
This operation marks a pivotal moment in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, showcasing the SBU's ability to execute complex and highly effective national security measures. The strike could significantly alter the regional military balance and highlights the advanced technological readiness of Ukrainian forces, potentially shifting the dynamics of the ongoing war.
In addition to the significant blow dealt to Russian aviation, the SBU has also targeted critical infrastructure within occupied territories. Recently, they successfully struck the FSB headquarters and neutralized a Pantsir-S1 air defense system, further demonstrating their operational capabilities. This coordinated approach underscores the SBU's strategy to dismantle Russian military assets.
