Ukrainian Security Service Unearths Major Corruption Scheme at State Gas Firm, Costing Over 295 Million Hryvnias

Scheme in Ukrgazvydobuvannia: state lost 295 million UAH
Служба безпеки України викрила масштабну корупційну схему у державній газовій компанії, втрати від якої перевищують 295 мільйонів гривень.

Corruption Ring Exposed at 'Ukrhazvydobuvannia'

According to Главком: In a joint operation, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), the Bureau of Economic Security, and the Office of the Prosecutor General have uncovered a criminal scheme at the state-owned gas extraction company 'Ukrhazvydobuvannia'. This operation caused state losses exceeding 295 million hryvnias and was orchestrated by company officials and affiliated private entrepreneurs.

The scheme involved embezzling funds allocated for the state company's procurement. Investigators found that private firms controlled by the suspects purchased chemical reagents and other products from manufacturers and official suppliers in Ukraine at market prices. They then resold these goods to 'Ukrhazvydobuvannia' at prices inflated by 200-300%. The SBU reported that the illicit profits were subsequently distributed among the scheme's participants.

A forensic economic examination confirmed the losses of over 295 million hryvnias. Law enforcement has already served suspicion notices to the head of a private company and an official of 'Ukrhazvydobuvannia' under Article 191 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which deals with misappropriation of property. This case highlights the ongoing challenges of corruption within Ukraine's strategic energy sector, which is critical for both the economy and national security.

Attack on Energy Infrastructure

Separately, on the night of March 27, Russian occupying forces carried out a drone attack on the energy infrastructure of Poltava region. This assault damaged technological equipment at an industrial enterprise and halted gas extraction. This incident underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy system amidst the ongoing war.

It is worth noting that Yuriy Tkachuk was appointed as the General Director of 'Ukrhazvydobuvannia'. The head of Naftogaz, Serhiy Kolesnikov, introduced the new leader to the company's team on December 26, 2025. The exposure of this corruption scheme may signal a push for greater control and transparency in state procurement processes, a key area for reform as Ukraine seeks to strengthen its institutions.

The recent corruption case at 'Ukrhazvydobuvannia' is not an isolated incident, as Ukraine's anti-corruption efforts continue to reveal significant fraud schemes across various sectors. For instance, a recent investigation has exposed a $29 million grain theft operation, highlighting the pervasive issues of misappropriation and the ongoing battle against corrupt practices in the country. These developments underscore the critical need for transparency and accountability in Ukraine's state enterprises.
