Ukrainian Security Service Officer Caught in $68,000 Mobilization Bribery Scheme
SBU Officer Apprehended in Bribery Sting
According to САП: On February 23, 2026, an officer of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) was caught accepting a bribe of $68,000. In exchange for the money, he promised to fraudulently arrange military service deferrals for two citizens, including resolving issues related to their removal from wanted lists at a Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center (TRC).
The SBU employee, who works in an inter-district department of the SBU's Main Directorate for Kyiv and the Kyiv region, received the bribe to conceal his illegal activity. The deferral he attempted to arrange involved providing knowingly false documents intended to falsely certify that the citizens had three children. These fabricated birth certificates were planned to be issued abroad.
Investigation and Consequences
Following the officer's exposure, urgent investigative actions are ongoing. Authorities are currently considering formally notifying him of suspicion and applying a pre-trial restraint measure. His actions have been preliminarily classified under Part 4 of Article 368 of Ukraine's Criminal Code, which deals with receiving a bribe by an official.
This case highlights serious corruption issues within state institutions, particularly concerning military mobilization, which remains a critical and sensitive matter for Ukraine during wartime. Bribery cases in the military sphere can have significant consequences for national security and public trust in state bodies. Further investigations may uncover broader corruption schemes and contribute to strengthening the rule of law in the country. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces in combating corruption within its own security apparatus while defending itself against external aggression.
