U.S. Senators in Odesa Signal New Russia Sanctions Pending in Congress
According to Главком: A delegation of U.S. senators visited Odesa on the eve of the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Their discussions focused on the regional security situation, the consequences of strikes on infrastructure, and the impact on American business interests. The lawmakers expressed readiness to consider new sanction bills that could be passed in the near future.
- The delegation included the following senators:
- Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire)
- Sheldon Whitehouse (Rhode Island)
- Richard Blumenthal (Connecticut)
- Chris Coons (Delaware)
The visit took place just before February 24th, marking four years since Russia's full-scale invasion. Over the course of the war, 47% of American companies operating in Ukraine have suffered losses from Russian strikes, with 57% reporting that their employees have been affected, including fatalities.
The senators toured the port of Odesa and held meetings with representatives from American agricultural and logistics companies. Jeanne Shaheen stated that her legislative proposals, including the 'Stop Russia and China' initiative and sanctions targeting the 'shadow fleet,' are ready for consideration when the Senate reconvenes next week. Richard Blumenthal is a co-sponsor of a separate sanctions bill also awaiting a vote.
Olha Stefanishyna, who accompanied the senators, noted that the delegation received a detailed briefing on the security situation, air defense capabilities, and the consequences of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. She emphasized that the senators witnessed a defiant Odesa holding the line and its resilient people continuing to live and work despite constant attacks.
Members of the delegation confirmed the urgent need to increase pressure on the aggressor by passing relevant bipartisan legislation in Congress.
This visit by U.S. senators to a frontline city underscores Washington's sustained support for Ukraine, particularly regarding tightening sanctions against Russia. The expected legislative packages represent a significant step in maintaining economic pressure on Moscow. The timing of the trip, near the invasion's anniversary, serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the Ukrainian people and businesses during the war. Congressional action on sanctions is a key component of U.S. strategy to support Ukraine's defense efforts.
