Ukraine's Foreign Minister Urges Global Officials to Boycott Moscow Non-Proliferation Conference
Appeal for a Boycott of Moscow's Conference
According to МЗС: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on senior international officials to boycott the Moscow Non-Proliferation Conference, scheduled for March 12-14. Sybiha argues that Russia, as the conference host, is an unfit organizer due to its own actions. This call comes as Russia continues to use its position as a nuclear state to exert pressure on the global stage.
The minister pointed out that Russia is waging an aggressive war and has occupied Europe's largest nuclear power plant. He stated that Russia violated its commitments under the Budapest Memorandum by attacking Ukraine. Sybiha emphasized that the Moscow conference cannot be considered a neutral platform, as the host nation openly engages in nuclear blackmail against the world.
Russia's Dangerous Role in Non-Proliferation
Andrii Sybiha further outlined three key aspects that demonstrate Russia's dangerous role in non-proliferation matters:
- The attack on Ukraine, breaching its obligations under the Budapest Memorandum;
- Persistent nuclear blackmail and rhetoric;
- The dismantling of international nuclear arms control mechanisms.
The minister urged international representatives to reject this forum, stating that participation is a political choice that undermines international peace and security.
The Ukrainian foreign minister's appeal for a boycott highlights the critical role of the international community in upholding global security, especially in light of Russia's aggression. A refusal by high-level officials to attend could increase pressure on Moscow and demonstrate a unified global stance against nuclear threats. This also reflects deep concerns about the integrity of international nuclear control frameworks, which are being jeopardized by Russia's conduct.
