First Chimpanzee Civil War in 500 Years Erupts in Uganda With Brutal Violence
Uganda Chimpanzee Study Reveals Social Fracture
According to НВ — Техно: A global team of researchers has published findings in the journal Science based on three decades of observing chimpanzees in Uganda, documenting the first confirmed case of a permanent group split among these primates. In 2015, a deep rift emerged between the Western and Central clusters, which became final by 2018. This division was accompanied by a series of violent killings that caught the attention of scientists.
Social Structure and Behavior of Chimpanzees
For the first twenty years of monitoring, the chimpanzee community functioned as a single cohesive unit. However, after the split, the Western group began hunting their former relatives. From 2018 to 2024, the following incidents were recorded:
- 7 fatal attacks on adult males;
- 17 brutal killings of infants.
Genetic analysis indicates that such events occur roughly once every 500 years.
“What is most shocking is that chimpanzees mercilessly kill their former friends, with whom they shared food and territory for years. The new group identity has completely erased and overwritten old partnership bonds.” - Aaron Sandel, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin
These observations provide fresh insights into chimpanzee social structure and their behavior during conflict. The wild animal community gained fame through the Netflix series 'Chimpanzee Empire,' highlighting the importance of such research for understanding primates and their evolutionary history.
The study confirms that chimpanzee social structures can be vulnerable to changes triggered by conflicts. This discovery may have significant implications for understanding the evolutionary mechanisms that influence animal behavior. Researchers hope that further studies will help reveal how such social splits affect primates in the wild and their ability to adapt to changing environments.
