The Crisis Inside the 425th 'Skelya' Regiment

According to Главком: Lawmaker Fedir Venislavskyi has stated there are no grounds to dismiss Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi following the scandal involving the 425th Separate Assault Regiment 'Skelya'. The regiment's commander, Yuriy Harkavyi, has been suspended pending an investigation.

According to the publication 'Babel', at least 26 recruits died in the 425th 'Skelya' Regiment between late 2025 and spring 2026. Most had been assigned to the unit for less than a month. In the majority of cases, official documents listed pneumonia as the cause of death. Military ombudswoman Olha Reshetylova noted that she first learned of beatings and abuse within the 'Skelya' Regiment in May-June 2025. Following an inspection at the training ground, 22 service members confirmed instances of violence.

  • A group of instructors has been identified as suspects in systematic violations of servicemen's rights.
  • However, the results of the investigation have not yet been released.
  • Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, is also looking into reports of possible torture in the 'Skelya' Regiment.

Lawmaker Mariana Bezuhla has called for Syrskyi's resignation after the testimonies of abuse in 'Skelya' were made public.

“We have individual responsibility,” said Fedir Venislavskyi, emphasizing that while the commander-in-chief did receive warnings about problems in the regiment, he is “effectively carrying out the tasks of liberating our territory and repelling the enemy.”

The situation in the 425th 'Skelya' Regiment has drawn significant public attention due to reports of widespread violence and poor service conditions. The suspension of the regiment's commander and the ongoing investigation may indicate serious structural issues within the military that require urgent resolution. Venislavskyi's remarks about accountability and the commander-in-chief's effectiveness, despite receiving signals about the problems, may reflect the complex challenges of managing Ukraine's Armed Forces during wartime.

The serious allegations surrounding the 'Skelya' Regiment have prompted significant scrutiny, especially following reports of deaths among new recruits. As the investigation into the regiment unfolds, understanding the full scope of the issues faced by these servicemen becomes crucial for the public and military oversight bodies alike.
