Slovakia Cuts Off Emergency Electricity Supplies to Ukraine

According to Главком: Slovakia has suspended emergency electricity deliveries to Ukraine. The decision stems from Ukraine blocking European specialists' access to the damaged 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar expressed concern at a closed-door EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, stating the Ukrainian side is not providing necessary information or communicating with Slovakia. Slovakia believes this obstruction prevents essential repairs, which could trigger a fuel crisis. This dispute highlights the complex interdependencies in European energy infrastructure, especially since Russia's invasion.

Challenges and Consequences

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has also called for considering a temporary halt to emergency power exports to Ukraine. Data shows emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine in January 2026 were twice the volume for the entire year of 2025. Slovakia announced the supply restrictions will remain until oil transit to the country is restored.

Juraj Blanar noted the Ukrainian approach is difficult to understand. He expressed hope Ukraine will use the time for negotiations and that further reciprocal measures will not be necessary. The minister also emphasized Slovakia requested permission for its representatives to visit the damage site and has asked EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen to send an inspection team to assess the scale of the damage.

This situation underscores the critical need for cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia on energy security, particularly as resources grow increasingly strained. A prolonged suspension of electricity supplies could have serious consequences for Ukraine's energy stability, which already faces numerous challenges in this sector. Proper communication between the countries could help prevent further escalation and ensure effective resolution of existing problems.
