Two Officials Face Charges Over Fatal Crash Linked to Road Conditions in Rivne Region
Officials Charged in Connection with Rivne Region Traffic Accident
According to Главком: Prosecutors in Ukraine's Rivne region have formally charged two officials in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on July 31, 2023, in the village of Horodets. The accident claimed the lives of three women, including a 13-year-old girl, and resulted in a pregnant passenger losing her child. This case highlights ongoing concerns about road maintenance and infrastructure safety in parts of Ukraine.
According to the regional prosecutor's office, the 39-year-old driver of a Landmark vehicle lost control while attempting to navigate around a section of sunken road surface. The car subsequently overturned and caught fire. An engineer from the private company responsible for maintaining that specific road section has been charged under Article 288 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code for violating traffic safety rules during road upkeep, leading to fatalities.
State Inspector Also Charged with Negligence
A state service engineer, whose duty was to monitor the condition of the road, has also been charged. He faces allegations of official negligence resulting in death under Part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code. Prosecutors state that expert examinations confirmed the direct cause of the tragedy was the poor state of the road; the sunken areas should have been either repaired or clearly marked with warning signs. Road safety advocates often point to such incidents as evidence of systemic issues requiring greater oversight and investment.
This situation underscores the critical need for proper oversight of road infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
It is imperative that responsible authorities and officials take concrete measures to improve road safety, as negligence in this area can have severe consequences for the lives and health of citizens.
