Heatwave in Spain claimed over 2600 lives: what is known about the victims
According to glavcom.ua: Since May 15, Spain has recorded 2635 cases of premature death related to high temperatures, reports larazon.es citing the Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo) of the Carlos III Institute.
The highest number of deaths, namely 1149 cases, occurred during the heatwave from August 3 to August 18. The Canary Islands reported 51 cases during the summer period, 15 of which were in August and 36 in July.
According to the report's author, «the vast majority of heat-related deaths occur among people aged over 65 (2529), particularly those aged over 75 (2347, of which 1747 were aged 85 and older)».
Among the victims of high temperatures, 1579 were women and 1056 were men. The number of heat-related deaths this summer was 40% higher than the previous year.
Overall, it has been found that the spring-summer period in Spain led to the premature death of 1180 people. The recent warm summer has sparked concern among scientists regarding marine life in the Mediterranean Sea.
