Ukraine’s June 2026 Heatwave Shatters Records Dating Back to 1963
Record-Breaking Temperatures Scorch Ukraine in June 2026
According to Главком: Ukraine experienced unprecedented heat in June 2026, with multiple cities setting new all-time highs for specific dates. On June 28, the thermometer in Chernivtsi hit +35.9°C, surpassing the previous daily record of 2022 by 3.7°C. The following day, June 29, saw even more records toppled across the country. In Lviv, temperatures soared to +37.4°C, smashing the old June 29 benchmark of +32.9°C, which had stood since 1963.
Khmelnytskyi Region Sees Historic Highs
The Khmelnytskyi region also registered extraordinary readings. Yampil recorded +37.6°C, exceeding the previous 1963 record of +34.2°C. Kamianets-Podilskyi hit +36.8°C, breaking the 1963 daily maximum of +35.3°C. Shepetivka reached +36.1°C, eclipsing the old mark of +33.8°C from 1963. Khmelnytskyi city itself posted +35.1°C, topping the 1963 record of +34.1°C. Nova Ushytsia logged +35.0°C, surpassing a record jointly held since 1963 and 2022 (+34.5°C). In Chernihiv, the mercury climbed to +33.1°C, edging past the previous June 29 record of +33.0°C, also set in 1963.
The extreme heat caused physical damage as well: in Vinnytsia, tram tracks on Soborna Street buckled under the temperatures. Forecasts for the first week of July predict dry, sunny weather with highs between +30°C and +35°C, and local peaks up to +36°C. This heatwave is part of a larger pattern, as Western and Central Europe are currently experiencing their most intense heatwave since weather records began.
Most of the previous daily maximums being broken were set in 1963, underscoring just how unusual the current weather situation in Ukraine truly is.
These record temperatures highlight a rise in extreme weather events across Ukraine, likely linked to global climate change. The situation in the western part of the country reflects a broader continental trend of more frequent and intense heatwaves. Such shifts pose serious risks to ecosystems, agriculture, and infrastructure, demanding urgent adaptation to new climatic realities.
The extreme temperatures recorded in late June were not unexpected, as a significant heatwave began impacting Ukraine on June 28, with temperatures reaching up to +35°C. This surge in heat is part of a broader trend affecting the region, as detailed in our report on the heatwave's onset.
