French President's Statement and Support for Ukraine

According to Главком: For the first time, the United States has formally stepped away from its neutral stance in Russia's war against Ukraine, according to French President Emmanuel Macron. Washington now openly aligns with European allies in backing Ukraine's territorial integrity, military efforts, energy aid, and sanctions against Moscow. Macron made this announcement following a meeting of the European Quint-comprising France, Britain, Italy, Poland, and Germany-held in Berlin.

The Quint gathering took place just ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7–8 in Ankara. Agreements reached at the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains were further solidified in an official document signed by all G7 nations, including the United States. This marks the first joint statement on Ukraine in 18 months.

Participation of European Quint Leaders

Attendees of the European Quint meeting included:

  • German Chancellor Friedrich Merz
  • British Prime Minister Keir Starmer
  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
  • Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk

During the meeting, Macron underscored the importance of backing Ukraine, stating:

'Regarding Ukraine, the United States has for the first time approved a text stating that they are no longer a neutral intermediary but, alongside us, support Ukraine's territorial integrity, military assistance, energy aid, and sanctions against Russia.' - Emmanuel Macron

The Ankara NATO summit will be the 36th in the alliance's history, bringing together leaders from all 32 member countries, including U.S. President Donald Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected to attend. Additionally, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in support of Ukraine is set for July 13.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Jeremy Lewin noted that Ukrainian forces are currently on the offensive, while Russian troops appear to be 'waiting out the winter.' This dynamic underscores the critical need for continued international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

Macron's statement and the U.S. shift signal a strengthening of the global coalition backing Ukraine, which could significantly influence the conflict's trajectory. The upcoming NATO summit in Ankara is expected to be a pivotal moment for discussing further military and economic aid to Ukraine, as well as coordinating allied responses to Russian aggression.

The recent shift in U.S. policy reflects a broader trend among Western nations to strengthen their stance against Russia. This comes on the heels of Trump's commitment to reinstating oil sanctions during the G7 summit, highlighting the growing urgency for coordinated action in support of Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
