Internship at a Nephrology Center

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Vitalii Shcherbak, a medical student, has received an internship placement at a nephrology center through a new electronic rating-based distribution system launched by Ukraine's Ministry of Health. Developed in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine on the Diia.Engine platform, with support from the Swiss-Ukrainian EGAP Program, this system aims to modernize how future doctors are assigned to training positions.

Vitalii decided to pursue a career in nephrology because his mother is a patient in that field. He studied at Kharkiv National Medical University and gained practical experience at a medical facility a year before entering his internship. He described the new internship admission rules introduced by the Ministry of Health as 'a fair and transparent opportunity to choose exactly what I have been working toward my whole life.'

Emotions and Motivation

On application day, Vitalii endured an anxious wait for the results. He shared his feelings:

“I saw what I had been hoping for – an internship placement at the nephrology center.” - Vitalii Shcherbak

Vitalii emphasized that 'I essentially exist thanks to these doctors,' so he immediately knew his calling was to join the ranks of nephrologists. He also noted that his motivation comes from a desire to 'continue the ambitions and path of my current colleagues and help as many people as possible lead full and happy lives.'

Thanks to the new electronic system, the internship distribution process has become more transparent and accessible for young medical professionals, which could positively impact the quality of healthcare services in Ukraine.

The introduction of an electronic rating-based distribution system in Ukraine represents a significant step in modernizing medical education and specialist training. It not only simplifies the internship application process but also ensures greater fairness and openness in selecting practice locations. Implementing such innovations may help attract young talent to the medical field, ultimately benefiting the overall standard of healthcare across the country.

In addition to Vitalii's success, the new electronic platform has made available 5,400 internship opportunities for medical graduates, marking a significant advancement in the allocation of training positions within the healthcare system. This initiative not only enhances transparency but also aims to better align young medical professionals with their career aspirations, ultimately benefiting the quality of healthcare across Ukraine.
