Sweden Tightens Citizenship Rules with Income Threshold and Language Test
Sweden Proposes Stricter Citizenship Requirements
According to Главком: The Swedish government has announced plans to significantly tighten the rules for obtaining citizenship. A coalition of governing parties has proposed a series of stricter conditions for prospective citizens. A key change is the extension of the mandatory residency period from five to a minimum of eight years.
Applicants with a criminal record, whether in Sweden or abroad, will face a maximum waiting period of 17 years before they can apply. Another major new requirement is proof of a stable monthly income exceeding 20,000 Swedish kronor (over 1,800 euros). Furthermore, candidates will be required to pass a test on Swedish language and societal knowledge. These changes reflect a broader trend in several European nations toward more stringent integration policies.
Migration Minister Johan Forssell stated that 'acquiring citizenship should be the culmination of an integration process, one that is largely based on personal effort and hard work.'
Continued Support for Ukraine
Alongside these domestic policy shifts, Sweden remains actively engaged in supporting Ukraine. The country, together with Denmark, will finance the procurement of air defense systems totaling over 246 million euros. Sweden will contribute 2.1 billion Swedish kronor (over 200 million euros), while Denmark will provide approximately 500 million kronor (over 46 million euros).
Both nations plan to acquire Tridon air defense systems, manufactured by the Swedish defense contractor BAE Systems Bofors. In a separate move, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) has transferred 63.82 million euros to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. SIDA's total contributions now amount to 203.08 million euros, of which 44.68 million euros have been allocated to a dedicated special account for nuclear safety guarantees.
The proposed citizenship reforms could make the path to becoming Swedish considerably more difficult for many. Aimed at raising integration standards, these measures may impact the country's demographic trends and immigration policy. Simultaneously, Sweden's substantial support for Ukraine underscores its commitment to international security and regional stability, highlighting the importance of allied cooperation in the face of ongoing global challenges.
