Kyiv Transformers Without Protection: Why the City is Unprepared for Attacks
Street transformers in Kyiv still lack proper protection, despite the full-scale war lasting nearly four years. This was stated by MP, former Minister of Housing and Communal Services Oleksiy Kucherenko in a comment to the publication 'Telegraph'.
'Street transformers are unprotected. My complaints are not so much about the leadership of 'Kyivteploenergo', but rather about the owner, about the city. Do they understand their responsibility well? Are they correctly allocating their budget there?', emphasized Kucherenko.
The expert called the attack on Kyiv on October 10 'powerful' and noted that air defense forces tried to shoot down everything possible, but the enemy continues to improve the tactics of missile strikes. The main target of the Russians were energy facilities, including transformers.
'The consequences are visible, the ballistic missiles got through. At one of the facilities, it caused very serious damage. But where drones were shot down, there should have been appropriate protection, including these ground shelters. And I have a question: why haven’t these shelters appeared in these 3.5 years?', asks the MP.
According to Kucherenko, there will be a fairly predictable electricity deficit in Kyiv, which can be covered by the unified energy system if there are no grid problems. At the same time, the expert warned that one generating station was severely affected.
'For now, it's not worth predicting that everything in Kyiv will be without electricity. I think right now, the capital will be addressing the facilities', noted Kucherenko.
There is still a problem in Kyiv with insufficient protection of street transformers, which could become a target in case of attacks. Measures must be taken to ensure the security of the city's energy supply to avoid unforeseen consequences due to the lack of proper protection for important facilities.
