After Brussels Talks Collapse, Trump Moves Toward 25% Tariff on EU Cars
Brussels Negotiations Stall
According to Главком: On May 6, a six-hour negotiation session in Brussels involving the European Commission, the Council of the EU, and the European Parliament failed to produce any agreement on implementing a trade deal with the United States. This deadlock has raised serious concerns about the future of transatlantic commerce. Tensions have been simmering ever since the deal was signed last July in Turnberry, Scotland, where the EU pledged to eliminate tariffs on U.S. industrial goods-yet European lawmakers have still not passed the necessary legislation.
U.S. Ambassador to the EU, Andrew Puzder, warned that if Brussels fails to honor its commitments, new tariffs will be imposed without delay.
Reports now indicate that Donald Trump is planning to introduce a 25% tariff on European automobiles, adding further strain to the relationship. Puzder also hinted that Trump is prepared to act swiftly, rather than waiting until July when the current temporary tariffs are set to expire.
Key Opponents of the Agreement
The European Parliament, led by Bernd Lange, stands as the primary obstacle to the deal, laying out specific conditions for continued talks. Lawmakers are demanding:
- the removal of U.S. tariffs on European steel;
- an automatic termination clause for the agreement at the end of Trump’s presidential term.
Frustrated by Trump’s earlier threats this year to annex Danish territory, the Parliament insists on the right to withdraw from the deal if the United States encroaches on the territorial integrity of any EU member state.
The next attempt to reach a compromise is scheduled for May 19. If no agreement is found, transatlantic trade could spiral into a deep crisis. Meanwhile, Trump has stated that the U.S. is continuing negotiations with Iran, describing Washington’s talks with Tehran as highly positive.
The failure to reach a compromise underscores the growing difficulties in transatlantic relations, which could have severe economic consequences for both sides. Imposing new tariffs risks escalating the trade conflict, affecting not only bilateral ties but the global economy as a whole. The upcoming talks on May 19 will be critical in determining the future course of U.S.-EU cooperation and may prove decisive for the stability of international trade.
As tensions mount over trade negotiations, the complexities of international agreements become increasingly evident. Similar to the challenges faced in the ongoing US-Iran nuclear talks, the failure to reach a consensus in Brussels could lead to significant repercussions for both sides, particularly in how they navigate their respective diplomatic landscapes.
