China agrees to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft, Trump announces
US-China deal for Boeing jets moves forward
According to Главком: President Donald Trump has announced that China has committed to buying 200 Boeing aircraft. The agreement emerged from talks between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping during Trump's visit to Beijing on May 14. However, the final number is significantly lower than the roughly 500 planes the two sides had been discussing before the meeting.
Following the announcement, Boeing shares dropped 4.1% in Thursday trading. The Chinese aviation market has become increasingly competitive, with Airbus overtaking Boeing in the 2010s to capture a larger share. Airbus has further strengthened its regional presence by opening an A320 final assembly plant in Tianjin.
Outlook for China's aviation sector
China currently ranks as the world's second-largest aviation market. According to forecasts from both Boeing and Airbus, the country will need at least 9,000 new aircraft by 2045. Many analysts believe China currently requires orders for up to 1,000 new planes. Specific details of the deal-including delivery timelines and aircraft models-have not yet been disclosed.
During their meeting, Trump and Xi also addressed major international issues such as the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, the Korean Peninsula, and the status of Taiwan. Trump formally invited Xi to visit the White House on September 24, 2026.
“Today he agreed to one thing: he is going to order 200 planes... 200 big ones”
Donald Trump
This agreement between the US and China could significantly influence bilateral relations, particularly in trade and economic cooperation. Although the order size is smaller than initially negotiated, it may signal some progress in ties between the two nations. Key questions remain regarding the deal's execution timeline and future collaboration in other areas.
The recent agreement highlights the ongoing efforts by both nations to strengthen their trade ties. As President Trump and Xi Jinping prepare for further discussions, the potential for enhancing the US-China trade partnership remains a focal point.
