Completion of energy facility construction and achievements in the energy sector

According to 5 канал — Економіка: Denys Shmyhal during the hour of questions to the government reported on the completion of the construction of about 200 second-level protection structures for energy facilities, as well as significant achievements in Ukraine's energy sector. 4.8 GW of generating capacities have been repaired, currently six units of nuclear power plants are in operation, and the plans for the current year foresee achieving over 10 GW of restored and newly built capacities. The gas reserves in the country amount to 14.3 billion cubic meters, and the coal reserves exceed the planned indicators.

According to Shmyhal, over 280 installations are in the process of installation, with the highest work rates recorded in Kyiv and Kharkiv regions. The repair of 4.8 GW of generating capacities has been completed, and approximately 4 GW are currently being restored. Six units of nuclear power plants provide generation, however, three of them are temporarily taken offline for scheduled maintenance. The country also has 1.8 GW of distributed gas generation, and the plan until the end of the year includes an additional 800 MW of capacities.

Energy resources and support from partners

Shmyhal: 'We are building a system of 'energy hundreds' – a network of small sources capable of operating autonomously.'

He also announced the start of a competition for the construction of 1.5 GW of new highly maneuverable gas generation. As of today, energy storage systems with a capacity of 1 GW have been installed. Regarding energy resource stocks, Shmyhal emphasized that 'we are ahead of schedule'. Coal stocks at the stations are also higher than planned, which, according to him, is sufficient for successfully going through the heating season under the baseline scenario.

Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has received 4,658 units of energy equipment from partners, with over 1,200 more expected. Additionally, throughout the year, 556 humanitarian aid shipments weighing 5.3 thousand tons have been delivered to the regions. Among the received shipments:

  • 2793 generators
  • 171 transformers
  • 190 block-modular boiler houses, cogeneration units, and boilers

In the context of constant threats from occupiers, who, according to intelligence estimates, will continue to attack critical infrastructure facilities, energy remains one of the priority areas of protection.

Shmyhal: 'When several ballistic missiles strike an object, each warhead weighing half a ton, no defense provides a 100% guarantee. But there is a big difference between damage and total destruction.'

He emphasized the importance of strengthening the country's energy infrastructure.

The development of the energy sector in Ukraine is critically important against the backdrop of ongoing military challenges and threats from the aggressor. Strengthening energy infrastructure and ensuring energy independence amid constant attacks on critical facilities has become a priority for the government. Receiving assistance from international partners, as well as active recovery and modernization of energy capacities, demonstrates the state's efforts aimed at stabilizing the energy system and increasing its resilience to external threats.

As Ukraine continues to enhance its energy security, it's crucial to note that by the end of the year, the country's power generation capacity is expected to rise significantly. This aligns with the government's ongoing efforts to restore and expand energy facilities, ultimately aiming for a total of 21.4 GW of generation. Such advancements not only bolster Ukraine's energy independence but also ensure a more resilient infrastructure for the future.
