Lost Mayan City Minanbe Unearthed in the Jungles of Mexico

Discovery of the Ancient City of Minanbe

According to НВ — Техно: An international team of Mexican and Slovenian researchers, led by archaeologist Ivan Šprajc, has uncovered the ancient Mayan settlement of Minanbe in a remote section of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. The city’s name translates to 'no path' in the Yucatec Maya language, reflecting its isolation. It remained hidden beneath dense vegetation for over a millennium, untouched by looters. This breakthrough marks the culmination of three decades of archaeological work in the Central Maya Lowlands, offering fresh insights into a civilization that continues to fascinate scholars worldwide.

To reach the site, the archaeologists first carved a five-kilometer trail through the jungle, then continued on all-terrain vehicles and on foot. Remarkably, Minanbe is the first site discovered in the last three years that shows no signs of looting or disturbance.

Architectural Discoveries

Using aerial LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanning technology, the team identified a settlement covering approximately 15 hectares. Among the structures found is a pyramid-shaped temple rising over 13 meters, showcasing features of the Rio Bec architectural style. Archaeologist Vitan Vujanović documented the temple, noting:

In total, 14 monuments have been cataloged, including:

• stelae
• altars

Notably, Stela 1 depicts a decapitation scene, while Monument 6 features hieroglyphic cartouches and an image of a ruler. Research indicates the city dates to the Late Classic period of the Maya civilization. The discovery of Minanbe represents a significant step forward in understanding the culture and architecture of this ancient society.

The uncovering of Minanbe underscores the importance of modern technologies in archaeology, such as LiDAR, which enable the detection of previously unknown sites that have remained hidden for centuries.
