According to Главком: On June 30, 2026, a memorial alley dedicated to fallen Ukrainian defenders was inaugurated in Kyiv's Desnianskyi district. However, what was meant to be a solemn tribute quickly turned into a scandal, as the final design failed to match the authorities' initial promises. Relatives of the deceased and social media users openly criticized the event's organizers. Maksym Bakhmato, head of the Desnianskyi District State Administration, avoided questions during the ceremony, though he had previously described the project as experimental in nature.

Promises vs. Reality

Officials had pledged memorial columns standing 3 meters tall with a thickness of 40x40 cm. In reality, the installed structures were one and a half times smaller. Instead of the promised metal plaques featuring photos and biographies of the fallen, the memorial displayed simple A4-sized cards. The daughter of fallen soldier Oleksandr Zaporozhets, who publicly voiced her frustration, stated:

“It hurts to see such a gap between what was promised and what was delivered.”

She added: 'The memory of our heroes deserves respect, proper honor, and honesty toward their families.'

Most families of the deceased refused to participate in the Heroes' Alley and filed complaints about the memorial's failure to meet expectations. Zaporozhets' daughter revealed she was invited to the Desnianskyi District Social Policy Department about two months prior, and only received a call four days before the opening to confirm her father's photo. This added to the growing anger among grieving families.

Official Response from the District Head

Maksym Bakhmato maintains that the project was approved by the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory (UINP). He reiterated that the alley is an experimental initiative. The memorial space is located on Chervonoi Kalyny Avenue, between the Florence cinema and the Desnianskyi District State Administration building. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law concerning burial sites for fallen defenders, underscoring the importance and significance of such memorials.
