Kyiv Heating Crisis: 1,940 Apartment Blocks Still Without Heat Following Attacks
Kyiv's Heating Supply Situation
According to Главком: As of 8:00 AM on January 23, heating has yet to be restored to 1,940 apartment buildings in Kyiv. This widespread outage is a direct result of attacks that targeted the city's infrastructure on January 9 and 20. The affected buildings are primarily concentrated in several key areas:
- the city's left bank,
- the Pechersk district,
- and partially in the Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts.
Utility crews worked through the night of January 22, restarting the heating supply to more than 650 additional buildings and continuing their restoration efforts. In a separate but related development, the city's water supply, which was also disrupted by a Russian attack, was fully restored by the evening of January 20.
Challenges and Response Efforts
The city's energy grid remains under severe strain, with emergency power outages still in effect. Energy specialists are developing technical solutions to move from unpredictable emergency blackouts to a more rigid, but scheduled, load-shedding system. Repair crews are working non-stop for days on end, facing immense pressure that has led to cases of frostbite and physical exhaustion among workers, with some specialists unable to cope with the relentless demands.
“This means that overnight, utility and energy workers resumed the heating supply to more than 650 buildings. And they continue to work,” stated Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
This heating crisis underscores the severe challenges Kyiv faces in maintaining critical civilian infrastructure during ongoing hostilities. Restoring heating is vital for resident safety during the harsh winter. While continued repair work and new technical measures may improve the situation, they require a monumental effort from utility and energy teams. Supporting these workers, who operate under dangerous and exhausting conditions, is currently of paramount importance.
