Foreign National Arrested in Kyiv for Targeting Delivery Drivers in Theft Scheme
Suspect Apprehended in Series of Thefts
According to Главком: Kyiv police have detained a 56-year-old foreign national suspected of stealing from delivery drivers. The suspect employed a deceptive tactic: he approached drivers at markets and trade fairs, asked for a ride, and then stole cash during the journey. According to law enforcement, he is linked to at least two incidents involving a total of 175,000 Ukrainian hryvnias-specifically 105,000 and 70,000 UAH.
Police Response and Investigation
Reports of these thefts were filed with police in the Solomianskyi and Desnianskyi districts. Criminal investigators, working alongside crime analysts, identified the suspect. He was arrested under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. A search of the individual uncovered 70,000 UAH of the stolen money.
Following the arrest, investigators charged the foreigner under Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers theft committed repeatedly under martial law. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison.
This case highlights a broader issue of fraud in Kyiv, where authorities have recently cracked down on other criminals. For instance, police also detained:
- A 37-year-old Kyiv resident who defrauded an acquaintance during the sale of a Jeep Cherokee SUV;
- Four fraudsters posing as SBU officers who swindled elderly Kyiv women out of approximately 9 million UAH.
The arrest of this theft suspect demonstrates law enforcement's proactive efforts to combat crime in the capital, especially under martial law. Police emphasize that fraud remains a serious threat, urging drivers and potential victims to stay vigilant and avoid trusting strangers, even in routine situations like offering rides.
In a related incident, a Kyiv resident faces serious charges for defrauding a friend during the sale of a Jeep Cherokee. This case further underscores the alarming trend of fraudulent activities in the city, highlighting the need for increased vigilance among the public.
