An-26 Aircraft Incident

According to Главком: On March 31, a Russian military An-26 transport plane crashed during a scheduled flight over Crimea, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Alexander Ivanovich Oтрощенko of the Russian Armed Forces and other officers. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported losing contact with the aircraft. This crash adds to a series of aviation incidents involving Russian military aircraft in recent years.

The incident occurred around 18:00 Moscow time. On board were high-ranking officers from the Russian Northern Fleet's headquarters, including six officers from military unit 45625, based in Severomorsk. Alexander Oтрощенko, who served as commander of the Northern Fleet's mixed aviation corps, had previously commanded the 45th Air Force and Air Defense Army.

Crash Causes and Consequences

The An-26 aircraft is capable of carrying up to 38 passengers and 6 crew members. Preliminary information suggests a technical malfunction as the cause of the crash, with an alternative theory being that the plane may have struck a cliff. No external fire impact on the aircraft was recorded.

The crash represents a significant loss for the Russian Armed Forces, particularly the Northern Fleet, which lost one of its highly experienced commanders. The investigation into the incident's causes is ongoing, with details to be released later.
