Rare Atmospheric Phenomenon in Ternopil Region

According to glavcom.ua: A rare atmospheric phenomenon has been recorded over Ternopil Region - mammatus clouds, which are also known as pouch clouds. This information was published by the publication 'Glavkom'.

Pouch or mammatus clouds are a type of cumulonimbus clouds (Cumulonimbus incus) that have a characteristic cell-like or pouch-like structure. They usually form in warm weather - before or after a thunderstorm.

These clouds mainly consist of ice crystals, and may sometimes be a combination of ice and water droplets.

During a mission on the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Nicole Ayers took a unique snapshot of a rare atmospheric phenomenon - a sprite. Sprites are brief electric discharges occurring in the upper layers of the atmosphere during thunderstorms. They are almost impossible to see from the Earth's surface, but from orbit, they look very impressive.

According to Ayers, photographs taken from the ISS can be useful for scientists in studying the nature of these phenomena - from their formation mechanisms to their physical characteristics and their relationship with thunderstorm processes.

Unique images from the ISS allow researchers to better understand the nature of sprites and their connection to thunderstorm phenomena. This discovery is important for further scientific research and advancing our understanding of atmospheric processes.
