Польща зробила важливий крок, ставши країною, де укладено перший шлюб між представниками однієї статі.

A Landmark Same-Sex Marriage in Poland

According to Главком: On May 14, Warsaw officially recorded the first same-sex marriage in Poland’s history. The union was originally solemnized between two Polish citizens in Germany back in 2018. This entry into Poland’s civil registry was made possible by court rulings, including a decision from the European Court of Justice and a March 2026 verdict by Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court.

It is worth noting that same-sex marriages are not legally permitted in Ukraine. However, last year the EU Court of Justice ruled that same-sex marriages performed in other EU member states must be recognized. In March 2026, Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court ordered the Warsaw civil registry office to register this marriage.

Warsaw Mayor’s Reaction

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski commented on the event, stating: 'This morning, we carried out the first transcription of a same-sex marriage certificate in line with court rulings.'

This milestone represents a significant step forward in the legal recognition of same-sex marriages in Poland.

The registration of Poland’s first same-sex marriage highlights the country’s gradual progress toward acknowledging LGBTQ+ rights, despite ongoing political and social hurdles. This development could also influence legal standards in other EU nations, including Ukraine, where the recognition of same-sex marriages remains a contentious issue. Future judicial decisions and policy shifts may further shape the landscape of LGBTQ+ rights across the region.
