A new species of butterfly has been named after the slain Ukrainian Irina Zarutska
According to glavcom.ua: Scientist Ronald Gatrelle first noticed the butterfly, which was named after Irina Zarutska, back in 1985. The insect was spotted in South Carolina, but at that time it did not receive an official name.
In the United States, a scientist decided to name a new species of butterfly after Ukrainian refugee Irina Zarutska, who became a victim of a knife attack. The butterfly is named 'Irina's Azure'. This information was disclosed by the media outlet 'Glavkom', referencing ABC News.
In 2018, director of the International Lepidopterology Research Harry Pavulaan conducted research on butterfly specimens in South Carolina and found that the discovered species is a unique hybrid butterfly. Pavulaan planned to name the new species before the tragic death of Irina Zarutska, but after her death decided to honor the memory of the Ukrainian refugee through this insect.
