The Heurigen Express in Vienna

According to УНІАН — Туризм: From April through October, a small blue-and-yellow two-car train called the Heurigen Express runs in Vienna. Operating Friday to Sunday with five trips per day, tickets cost €9.9. The route passes through several scenic locations, including:

  • Heiligenstadt
  • Nussdorf
  • Nussberg
  • Kahlenberg
  • Grinzing
  • Mayer am Pfarrplatz

The train departs from Heiligenstadt in the Döbling district. It travels to the municipality of Nussdorf, stopping at the Nussberg and Kahlenberg hills. Then it descends to the village of Grinzing and continues to the Heuriger (wine tavern) Mayer am Pfarrplatz, where the famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven lived in 1817. Vienna is the only world capital with a major wine industry within its city limits, and the tradition of selling wine from one's own property dates back to the late 18th century.

History of Winemaking

The history of winemaking in the region stems from a decree issued by Habsburg Emperor Joseph II in August 1784. This decree granted residents the right to sell their produce on their own land at any price.

“The idea officially took shape in August 1784, when Habsburg Emperor Joseph II issued a landmark decree that gave residents the legal right to sell their products on their own plots at any price,” notes wine expert Gabi Knebl.

The vast majority of wines available along the Heurigen Express route are white, including Grüner Veltliner, Wiener Gemischter Satz, and Riesling. This miniature train offers a wonderful way to experience Vienna's wine culture, allowing passengers to enjoy local wines and picturesque views. The Heurigen Express not only provides tourists and locals with convenient access to wine regions but also helps promote traditional Austrian wine culture. Thanks to the historical context linked to the imperial decree, this route reflects Vienna's rich heritage as a wine center, making it an important part of the city's cultural life. Visiting the Heurigen Express can be a fascinating experience for those wanting to explore local traditions and flavors.
