Hungary Accused of Seizing Ukrainian Bank Funds and Drafting Law to 'Legalize' Action
Ukraine Levels Accusations Against Hungary
According to МЗС: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has accused Hungary of appropriating funds belonging to a Ukrainian state-owned bank and is now attempting to legitimize this act through new draft legislation. He emphasized that Hungary's actions violate the rights of Ukrainian citizens, citing in particular the mistreatment of seven individuals. This dispute occurs within a broader context of strained relations between the two neighboring nations.
'Hungary is descending into a spiral of lawlessness. After seizing the money from a Ukrainian state bank, they are now proposing a bill to 'legalize' the theft. This is a de facto admission that Hungary's actions have no legal foundation. They are simply compounding illegality with more illegality. We will hold all those involved accountable – not only for the theft of funds but, first and foremost, for the cruel treatment of seven Ukrainian citizens,' stated Minister Andrii Sybiha.
Strained Ties Between Ukraine and Hungary
Sybiha noted that Hungary's conduct constitutes a serious breach of the European Convention on Human Rights and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. This incident highlights the ongoing tension between Ukraine and Hungary, a relationship long marked by various political and economic disagreements. The Ukrainian minister's statements could lead to fresh diplomatic conflicts and intensify international criticism of the Hungarian government's actions. The situation demands attention from European institutions, which must ensure their members adhere to principles of human rights and the rule of law.
