Ukraine Receives 127,000 BCG Vaccine Doses for Newborn Immunization Program
Newborn Vaccination in Ukraine
According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Ukraine has taken delivery of 127,000 doses of the BCG vaccine for immunizing newborns against tuberculosis. This batch is currently being distributed to regions and delivered to healthcare facilities. The BCG vaccine is a critical tool in preventing severe forms of tuberculosis in children. According to the national protocol, the vaccination is administered within the first 24 hours after a child's birth.
For infants who were not vaccinated in the maternity hospital, immunization is provided at healthcare institutions following a consultation with a doctor. Tuberculosis is a dangerous airborne disease, primarily spread through coughing or sneezing by an individual who is actively shedding the tuberculosis bacteria.
Partnership for Vaccine Supply
The vaccine supply is part of a partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF. The partnership agreement between Gavi and Ukraine was signed in late 2024. A portion of the vaccines is funded by Gavi, in line with Ukraine's national Immunization Strategy through 2030. Within this partnership, UNICEF coordinates the procurement and delivery of vaccines to the country, while the Ukrainian Public Health Center manages the distribution of the doses to individual regions.
Securing this BCG vaccine supply is a vital step in Ukraine's fight against tuberculosis, emphasizing the importance of immunizing newborns to prevent this serious illness. Vaccinating infants according to protocol can significantly reduce the risks of tuberculosis spreading within the population, a priority given ongoing global health challenges. This collaboration with international organizations also highlights the crucial role of external support in ensuring Ukraine's access to essential vaccines.
