Ukraine Clears Landmines from an Area Exceeding the Size of Odesa Region
Ukraine's Progress in Landmine Clearance
According to Мін. Оборони: At an international event in Geneva, representatives from Ukraine's Ministry of Defense shared data on the scale of their demining operations. The figures reveal that Ukraine has safely cleared and returned to use more than 40,700 square kilometers of territory-an area larger than the entire Odesa region. This immense task is a direct consequence of the territory being liberated from Russian occupation forces.
During the Ukraine Mine Action Partner Coordination Workshop in March 2026, it was reported that defense ministry units cleared 876 hectares of land that month. In total, since the start of 2026, they have demined 2,831 hectares. The clearance of explosive remnants of war is a critical first step before reconstruction can begin and displaced residents can return home safely.
The Critical Role of Demining in Recovery
This data underscores Ukraine's significant advancement in demining, a vital phase in restoring infrastructure and enabling citizens to resettle in liberated areas. Given that removing landmines is essential for public safety and the return to normalcy, international forums like this one are crucial for highlighting the ongoing challenge and securing continued support from global partners.
As Ukraine continues its vital demining efforts, the significant area cleared presents not only safety benefits but also opportunities for agricultural recovery. The recent operations have paved the way for farmers to return to their fields, facilitating the restoration of the agricultural sector.
