First In-Person Meeting Between Ukrainian and Georgian Foreign Ministers Held in Chișinău
Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine and Georgia
According to Главком: On May 15, Andrii Sybiha of Ukraine and Maka Bochorishvili of Georgia met face-to-face in Chișinău for the first time. The talks took place on the sidelines of the 135th session of the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers. The discussion centered on bilateral relations, cooperation within the GUAM framework, and the political situation in the South Caucasus.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the state of their bilateral ties, with the Georgian delegation pointing to unresolved issues. Bochorishvili highlighted "positions that continue to hinder the normalization of bilateral relations." At the same time, Georgia reaffirmed its unwavering political and humanitarian support for Ukraine, despite the deterioration in relations between the two countries following Russia's full-scale invasion.
Current State of Relations and Their Challenges
It is worth recalling that Tbilisi has refused to join anti-Russian sanctions, while Georgian authorities have accused Kyiv of obstructing Georgia's path to EU membership. In late 2024, mass protests erupted in Georgia after the government decided to suspend EU accession negotiations until 2028. Tensions between Ukraine and Georgia also escalated due to sanctions Kyiv imposed on Bidzina Ivanishvili, head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
Notably, ahead of the Chișinău meeting, Sybiha held a phone call with Bochorishvili on May 6. Earlier in May, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also met with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in Yerevan. In his remarks, Sybiha expressed Ukraine's readiness "to open a new chapter in relations with Georgia," emphasizing the importance of a pragmatic and constructive dialogue to improve ties between the two nations.
The meeting between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Georgia unfolded against the backdrop of strained relations that have worsened since Russia launched its full-scale military aggression. Despite the challenges, both sides signaled their intent to work toward better cooperation. The importance of this dialogue underscores the shared desire of both countries to find common solutions amid regional instability and global challenges.
The recent meeting in Chișinău marks a significant step in Ukrainian-Georgian relations, especially in light of the ongoing challenges both countries face. As Ukraine seeks to enhance its diplomatic ties, Kyiv's commitment to constructive dialogue with Tbilisi underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing mutual concerns and regional stability.
