Bus Routes Rerouted: Ukraine and Poland Adjust Crossings Amid Shehyni Repairs
Bilateral Agreement on Alternative Border Crossings
According to Міністерство інфраструктури: In response to ongoing construction at the Shehyni-Medyka checkpoint-which began on June 15 and is scheduled to continue through the end of 2027-Ukraine and Poland have reached a new agreement. Regular passenger transport permits originally issued for Shehyni can now also be used at the Nyzhankovychi-Malhowice and Smilnytsia-Krościenko border crossings. This change, jointly approved by Ukraine’s Ministry of Development, Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure, and Poland’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, has already been implemented in the eCherha queueing system.
Transport operators are now authorized to apply their Shehyni-designated regular service permits at the Nyzhankovychi and Smilnytsia checkpoints. This measure is designed to maintain uninterrupted passenger flows during the long-term reconstruction at Shehyni.
Guidance for Transport Operators
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine has urged carriers to take note of these changes and, if needed, make use of the alternative crossing points. The goal is to ensure continuity of cross-border passenger services while the main checkpoint undergoes extensive renovations. From now on, carriers will be able to operate regular international passenger routes through three separate border crossings.
These adjustments are critical for preserving seamless passenger travel between Ukraine and Poland, especially given the prolonged repair work at one of the busiest checkpoints. The new routing options will help ease congestion at other border points and enhance both comfort and safety for travelers journeying between the two countries. It is essential that both transport companies and passengers stay informed about the new opportunities created by this reconstruction period.
As the construction at the Shehyni-Medyka checkpoint continues, many travelers may find themselves impacted by the ongoing repairs. For those looking for alternatives, it's important to be aware of how these changes affect bus services, particularly in light of recent disruptions.
