Border Repairs Halt Ukrainian Buses Heading to Poland
Construction Underway at the Shehyni-Medyka Border Crossing
According to УНІАН — Туризм: Starting June 15, 2026, and continuing through November 2027, the bus lane for vehicles entering Poland at the Shehyni-Medyka checkpoint will undergo repairs. According to the Lviv Customs Office, this will temporarily suspend bus traffic from Ukraine into Poland at this specific crossing. This disruption comes as part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving border facilities.
It is important to note that buses traveling from Poland into Ukraine will continue to operate normally during this period. As a result, anyone planning to cross the border from Ukraine to Poland by bus must now use alternative checkpoints along the Ukrainian-Polish border. The Lviv Customs Office urges transport operators to take this into account when planning routes and to inform passengers well in advance.
Impact on Transport Routes
Earlier in 2026, a technical database failure at Poland's border with Ukraine affected all checkpoints in the Lviv and Volyn regions. This incident also caused disruptions at the Shehyni-Medyka crossing, impacting passenger services. The current construction work is expected to significantly alter travel patterns between Ukraine and Poland, as carriers will need to find alternative border points.
These changes will likely lead to longer travel times and higher costs for both operators and passengers. The previous system failures had already created bottlenecks, highlighting the urgent need for better infrastructure and technological upgrades at border crossings. The ongoing repairs, while necessary, underscore the challenges facing cross-border transport in the region.
The upcoming changes at the Shehyni-Medyka crossing coincide with broader efforts to enhance border management. In a related development, joint border controls between Ukraine and Poland are set to be implemented, aiming to streamline the crossing process and improve security. These initiatives reflect the ongoing commitment of both nations to facilitate smoother transit while addressing existing infrastructural challenges.
