Call for Boycott of 2026 Winter Paralympics Opening

According to Главком: Ukraine is calling on its allies to boycott the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games in Milan. This appeal is a direct response to the decision by the International Paralympic Committee to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that such participation is unacceptable while Russia's war against Ukraine continues. The move highlights the ongoing tension between the principles of global sport and geopolitical realities.

Athletes from Aggressor Nations to Compete

The International Paralympic Committee has granted permission for six Russian and four Belarusian athletes to take part in the Games. They will compete under their national flags, and should they win gold medals, their national anthems will be played. Ukraine's Minister of Youth and Sports, Matvii Bidnyi, has confirmed that Ukrainian officials will not attend the 2026 Paralympics in Italy.

Andrii Sybiha emphasized that "permitting the flags of aggressor states to be raised at the Paralympic Games while Russia's war against Ukraine rages is wrong-both morally and politically."

He further noted that in modern Russia, even Paralympic sport is used to glorify participants in the war against Ukraine. Providing such a system with a prestigious international platform, Sybiha argues, sends a dangerous signal that accountability can be sidelined. This stance reflects a broader concern that major sporting events should not be used to legitimize aggression.

Ukraine's position underscores deep apprehension about the use of international sports to normalize relations with aggressor nations. A boycott of the opening ceremony could serve as a significant symbolic act, demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine and a refusal to accept business as usual. It may also influence future decisions by global sports bodies regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in world competitions.
