Ukraine to Boost Gas Imports from Poland with Expanded Capacity Starting February 2026
Expanded Gas Imports from Poland to Ukraine
According to Главком: Gas transmission system operators in Poland and Ukraine have agreed to a phased increase in the capacity for importing gas from Poland into Ukraine, with the expansion set to begin in February 2026. This agreement is a crucial step toward ensuring stable heating for Ukrainian homes, hospitals, and schools. Under the plan, the daily capacity for this route will rise from 15.3 million cubic meters to 18.4 million cubic meters by the end of April 2026.
This move is part of Ukraine's broader strategy to diversify its energy supplies and reduce dependency on other sources. In 2025, Ukraine imported 2.1 billion cubic meters of gas via Poland, accounting for over 30% of its total imports. Approximately 600 million cubic meters of this volume consisted of American liquefied natural gas (LNG). Additionally, Ukraine and its European partners have launched two new interstate natural gas import routes:
- Route 2
- Route 3
These routes were established as part of the 'Vertical Corridor' initiative.
Energy Sector Cooperation
The agreement underscores the growing strategic energy partnership between Ukraine and Poland, which can strengthen Ukraine's energy independence. Regulators from Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece have already approved joint capacity booking products for natural gas imports, highlighting the importance of regional energy collaboration. Increasing import capacity is part of systematic efforts to enhance Ukraine's energy security and diversify its gas supply routes, with the Polish corridor remaining a key import channel that provides access to various gas sources.
This expansion of gas imports from Poland may also serve as a response to potential supply crises from traditional sources. As Ukraine continues to integrate into European energy networks, such cooperation could play a vital role in ensuring the stability of energy supplies across the region.
