Fuel Cashback for Ukrainians to End on May 31
Fuel Compensation Program Comes to a Close
According to Главком: The government initiative that reimbursed fuel costs officially ended on May 31, 2026. Running from March 20 to May 31, 2026, the program reached 2.3 million Ukrainians. Participants received refunds of 15% on diesel, 10% on gasoline, and 5% on autogas. The maximum monthly cashback in May was capped at 500 hryvnias. Notably, 91% of users drove economy-class vehicles.
In late April, the government decided to extend the program until May 31, but reduced the maximum payout from 1,000 to 500 hryvnias per month. During the program’s duration, around 500,000 new National Cashback cards were issued. Accrued funds will remain available until June 30, 2026; after that, any unused money will automatically return to the state budget. Cashback for May purchases will be paid out in July.
How to Use Accumulated Funds
Authorities emphasized that the program was a temporary crisis-response measure. Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated:
“This was a temporary anti-crisis financial support tool for our people during the worst global oil crisis in 50 years.”
What can you do with the money you’ve built up? Funds can be spent on:
- utility bills,
- medications,
- Ukrainian-made books and food products,
- donations to support the Defense Forces.
The 'National Cashback' program continues to operate, but without the fuel component.
The end of the fuel compensation program marks a significant milestone in Ukraine’s financial support for its citizens amid a global oil crisis. While the initiative provided substantial relief to millions, its conclusion may strain household budgets, especially for those who relied on fuel refunds. The government has urged people to use their remaining funds for essential needs, highlighting the need to adapt to new economic realities. The continuation of the 'National Cashback' program-minus the fuel element-signals the government’s intent to support the population in other areas, even after this specific initiative wraps up.
The conclusion of the fuel compensation program has raised concerns among participants about the fate of their unspent cashback. As the authorities have clarified, any remaining funds will revert to the state budget after June 30, 2026.
