Ukrainian Firm Fire Point Unveils Pan-European Missile Defense Initiative 'Freya'
Joining the Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian defense company Fire Point has announced its entry into the anti-ballistic missile coalition and introduced its new project, Freya. The initiative aims to develop a unified, secure air and missile defense system with a primary focus on intercepting ballistic threats. Core principles of the project include open-source architecture, both horizontal and vertical scalability, and a reduced cost per intercept. The project’s motto, 'quis nisi nos,' translates to 'who, if not us.'
Technical Specifications and System Integration
As part of the project, Fire Point unveiled the FP-7.x interceptor missile. It achieves speeds between 1,500 and 2,000 meters per second, measures 7.25 meters in length, and has a fuselage diameter of 0.53 meters (1.15 meters with adapter). The missile uses an infrared seeker for terminal guidance, while earlier architecture relied on a semi-active radar seeker produced by Diehl Defence.
For long-range target detection, the project considers several radar systems:
- SAAB Giraffe 8A/4A
- Thales Ground Master 400
- Hensoldt TRML-4D
Illumination and guidance radar will be based on either the Weibel GFTR-2100/48 or the Leonardo KRONOS Land. The launcher is a lightweight, mobile unit manufactured in-house by Fire Point. The command post will utilize the Kongsberg FDC, featuring an open architecture and Network Access Nodes modules.
Integration with existing Ukrainian air and missile defense systems will be achieved through the Link-16 protocol, compliant with NATO STANAG 5516. A licensing agreement for NATO’s CRC System Interface (CSI) software was signed on May 29, 2025. The Delta situational awareness system is already integrated with Link-16 and connected to the network.
Despite attempts to hinder us and many distractions, our caravan moves forward. Fire Point is joining the anti-ballistic missile coalition.
Denys Shtilerman, Fire Point representative
He further noted that 'soon, interceptor missiles will be in the skies not only of Ukraine but across all of Europe.' Through the Freya project, Ukraine will be able to leverage a wide array of air defense systems, including:
- NASAMS
- SAMP/T
- Patriot
- Crotale
- IRIS-T
- S-300
- BUK
- Gepard
- Stormer
This will significantly enhance the country’s defensive capabilities. Fire Point’s membership in the anti-ballistic missile coalition and the implementation of the Freya project underscore Ukraine’s intensified efforts to strengthen its air defense amid growing threats. By adopting cutting-edge technologies and integrating with NATO systems, Ukraine aims not only to improve its own defense posture but also to deepen security cooperation with international partners.
As the development of the Freya missile defense project progresses, it is important to consider the recent controversies surrounding similar initiatives. Discussions regarding the FREYJA missile shield have been stalled due to leaks, placing Ukrainian firm Fire Point at the center of the unfolding scandal.
