Ukrainian Drones Cripple Russian Supply Lines Near Mariupol
Hornet Drones Intensify Operations
According to Главком: According to a report from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukraine’s Hornet drones have stepped up activity around occupied Mariupol, targeting Russian fuel tankers and military vehicles along the T-0509 highway connecting Mariupol and Donetsk. On May 10, Russian military bloggers voiced alarm over these strikes, warning that conditions along supply routes in the area are growing increasingly perilous. These developments mark a notable escalation in Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities.
The Hornet drones are not only patrolling the T-0509 but also reaching the M-14 highway, a vital corridor running along the Azov Sea coast to occupied Crimea. Bloggers have drawn comparisons between the situation near Mariupol and the M-30 highway stretch from Horlivka through Panteleimonivka and Yasynuvata to Donetsk, where Ukrainian forces managed to paralyze Russian logistics. One blogger remarked:
“The situation along supply lines near Mariupol is starting to resemble the M-30 highway, where Ukrainian forces paralyzed Russian logistics.”
Growing Threats to Russian Forces
Experts assess that by 2026, the M-30 route had become more hazardous than during 2024–2025, despite being farther from the front line. This shift is attributed to the increased range of Ukrainian drones. Bloggers also noted that Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems have proven ineffective against Hornet drones, which are equipped with Starlink support and could become automated within the next year.
For the first time since May 2022, the Azov unit announced its return to Mariupol, where it is conducting reconnaissance and strike missions from the air. Drones are surveilling the occupied city and delivering precision strikes on enemy positions. According to military bloggers, Ukrainian drones with Starlink connectivity have a range of up to 200 kilometers, enabling them to reach key targets on the M-14 highway, including routes critical to Russian military operations.
The intensified deployment of Hornet drones near Mariupol signals a shift in Ukrainian tactics in response to threats from Russian forces. The range and effectiveness of these drones jeopardize enemy supply chains, potentially undermining Russia’s ability to sustain operations in the region. The return of the Azov unit to Mariupol also underscores the city’s strategic importance in the broader context of the war and Ukrainian military strategy.
As the situation near Mariupol intensifies, it's essential to understand the broader implications of these drone operations. Recent reports highlight how Ukrainian drones are striking Russian logistics 100 km from the frontline, further complicating supply routes for Russian forces. This escalation not only reflects the increasing effectiveness of Ukraine's drone warfare but also raises concerns about the future of military operations in the region.
