Ukrainian Drones Strike Two Russian Helicopters 150 km from Frontline: Mi-17 and Mi-28
Ukrainian Forces Strike Deep in Russia's Voronezh Region
According to Главком: Operators from Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces successfully hit Mi-17 and Mi-28 helicopters in Russia's Voronezh region on April 29. The attack occurred while the helicopters were on the ground, likely undergoing maintenance. Enemy personnel responsible for operating these aircraft were also present nearby. The target area lies approximately 150 kilometers from the frontline.
Joint Operation by Ukrainian Brigades
The strike was carried out by mixed crews from the 429th 'Achilles' Brigade and the 43rd Separate Artillery Brigade, in coordination with the 'A' Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). According to the SBU,
“After confirming target coordinates, operators carried out sequential drone strikes. Both targets were successfully hit.”
The Mi-17, part of the Mi-8/Mi-17 family, is a medium-lift transport helicopter used for troop transport, airborne assaults, medical evacuation, and attack missions. Each unit is valued at approximately $15 million. The Mi-28 is a dedicated attack helicopter designed to destroy armored vehicles and personnel, with an estimated cost of around $18 million and featuring a reinforced armored cockpit.
This operation is part of a broader campaign where Ukrainian forces have recently destroyed a Russian Ka-27 helicopter over the Black Sea, and previously eliminated a Ka-52 'Alligator' attack helicopter.
The attack highlights the growing effectiveness of drone warfare in the conflict. Losing such high-value assets as the Mi-17 and Mi-28 can significantly degrade Russian combat capabilities, especially when they are caught during maintenance. These strikes also demonstrate improved coordination between different branches of Ukraine's armed forces and the SBU. Both helicopter types play critical roles in Russian military operations, making their destruction a substantial tactical blow.
This successful operation is part of a series of strikes that showcase Ukraine's advancing drone capabilities.
