Severe Arctic Blast to Hit Ukraine, Bringing Temperatures as Low as -27°C
Forecast for a Major Cold Snap in Ukraine
According to ХВИЛЯ: A severe cold wave is set to strike Ukraine, beginning on January 30. The Cherkasy Hydrometeorological Center warns that an ultra-polar air mass intrusion will bring intense frosts, icy conditions, and the influence of the Daniel anticyclone. This type of extreme winter weather is a recurring challenge for the country's infrastructure.
January 29 will be the last relatively warm day before the plunge. Deteriorating conditions will start on January 30, with rain turning to wet snow. In the Cherkasy region, meteorologists forecast nighttime lows plummeting to between -20°C and -27°C. From February 1 to 4, daytime temperatures are expected to remain bitterly cold, ranging from -15°C to -22°C.
Vitaliy Pistryan, Head of the Cherkasy Regional Hydrometeorological Center, stated that all accumulated water on roads and sidewalks will freeze solid, creating hazardous icy surfaces.
He added that this period will likely see the coldest temperatures of the current winter. Precipitation is expected to cease by Saturday, but the frost will intensify as dry, icy air is carried in by northerly winds. A slight moderation in the cold is possible by the middle of the following week.
Impact of the Deep Freeze on Daily Life
The impending deep freeze is anticipated to significantly disrupt daily life, affecting transportation and road conditions. With the sharp temperature drop, adhering to safety precautions on roads and walkways is crucial to avoid injuries from ice. Monitoring weather updates will be vital in the coming days, as the combined effects of the anticyclone and extreme cold may strain utility and emergency services.
Given the forecasts, residents are advised to:
- Ensure they have adequate warm clothing
- Prepare for potential power supply disruptions due to the severe weather
